ARCS Committee Member Profile

Danielle Swanson, Director of Collections at the Intrepid Museum in New York City
Member of the Meet-Ups Committee

I am the Director of Collections at the Intrepid Museum in New York City and volunteer with the Meet-Ups Committee of ARCS where we plan virtual and in-person events. In my role I oversee all aspects of the management and care of the Museum's collections, facilitate donations and loans, as well as contribute to exhibition development and installation of artifacts on display. The Intrepid Museum exemplifies the intersection of history and innovation and maintains four historic vessels: the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, submarine USS Growler, space shuttle Enterprise, and a supersonic Concorde airliner. Our collection contains artifacts, archives, photographs, and other media related to the service history of our vessels. Donations often come from former crew members or their families, and we also have an extensive oral history collection that documents firsthand accounts of life on board. Our main collections storage space is located on Intrepid in what used to be the officer's dining room. It is located in a secured, central area of the ship and maintains its own separate HVAC system. Working on a historic naval ship has its challenges, but we are constantly trying to make our exhibitions and content accessible to a variety of audiences. Parts of the ship still function as they did when Intrepid was in service, including interior bomb elevators and our portside aircraft elevator. In my role as Director of Collections I also oversee our Aircraft Restoration team, who help to maintain a fleet of 28 aircraft, many of which are displayed on Intrepid's flight deck. Recently, we welcomed back the Concorde after a months long off site repainting project, and it was very exciting to be on the ground when the aircraft returned to our pier. Whether it is moving a large aircraft on the flight deck, climbing through a small hatch in Growler, or rehousing a crew member's personal artifact from their service, I am always in awe of the dedication and sacrifice those who worked with our vessels selflessly contributed, and am honored to preserve their stories for future generations.

ARCS Mentoring Program
Applications for the Mentoring Program Now Open!

The Mentoring Program was established in response to a growing community of emerging and mid-career collections professionals seeking advice and guidance on complex collections management issues.

Participants in the ARCS Mentoring Program are asked to commit for a 6-month period. During this time, it is expected that mentors and mentees will communicate and share ideas and knowledge. We will ensure communication is established, and check in on the relationship during the time period. At the end of the 6-month program, the mentor and mentee may continue their relationship at their discretion.

Both prospective mentors and mentees must fill out an application form. To apply for the next round, which runs July - December 2024, complete either a Mentor or Mentee application by Friday, June 14, 2024.
