Description & Registration
The role of a courier can be an exciting but stressful responsibility when managing loans and exhibitions. The Covid pandemic certainly created some new challenges, but methods emerged to streamline oversight of objects in certain scenarios. ARCS is pleased to announce the return of the Courier Training Workshop, a program to better equip registrars and collections specialists to handle the challenges and curveballs of traveling with objects, especially internationally. ARCS first presented the Courier Training Workshop in March 2020, and we are thrilled to be back to present the first in-person program in 3 years. Please join us for a pair of one-day workshops designed to equip both individual couriers and their managers with tools needed for success. Attend one or both days to strengthen your couriering skills and learn how to train others for the journey.
The workshop is based on the Courier Training Program Framework, developed by the European Registrars Group to promote best practices in the museum and gallery sector. This curriculum - adapted for a US-focus - provides attendees with comprehensive manuals for both courier and manager including training presentations and real-world scenarios. Sessions will be led by:
- Jacqueline Cabrera, Principal, Cabrera + Art + Management LLC. Jacqui planned and collaborated with the EU Registrars to present the 2020 workshop
- Tina Sullivan, Vice President of Fine Arts, Masterpiece International
- Rita Gomez, Lead Preparator, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA
Day One of the workshop will be geared toward professionals responsible for outgoing loans and couriers. This workshop will provide an overview of the courier framework, followed by an in-depth session that will enable you to train your couriers and potentially develop your own training materials based on the framework.
Day Two will be geared towards both new and experienced couriers. Sessions will detail the purpose and responsibilities of couriers; how to prepare loans for travel; condition reporting; transit practices by land, air, and water; dealing with the unexpected; and courier do’s and don’ts.
*Please note: Managers of couriers are encouraged to attend both days to gain this first-hand experience of training with the framework.
